The Liverpool Tapestry:
People, Places and Passions
This is a depiction of part of the mural in the 5th floor restaurant
at Lewis’s Department store, which after many decades as a major
part of the retail landscape of Liverpool was announced as due
to close in 2008. The murals, amongst other original elements
of the interiors, were celebrated in an exhibition devoted to the
department store in 2008.
I have embroidered since I was 7 years old, and although I haven’t
done much canvas work in the past I relished the opportunity to
design something to depict my beloved City of Liverpool. I looked
at the symbols and statues of Liverpool, and decided that one
of my pieces would be an Iron Man, from Anthony Gormley’s
Another Place’, as a modern symbol of our great city and which
have been taken to people’s hearts.”
