People, Places and Passions

This piece shows the Atlantic Tower Hotel on the waterfront, next
to St. Nicolas’s Church (the Seamen’s Church) by the Pier Head.
To reflect the location, the hotel is shaped like the prow of a ship
facing out onto the Mersey.
This piece shows the entrance to the Birkenhead Tunnel, which
was the longest underwater road tunnel when it was opened in
1934,
a title which it held for the next 24 years. Opened by King
George V, it was called ‘Queensway’, but is known in the city as ‘the
old tunnel’ following the opening in 1971 of the Wallasey Tunnel
(‘
the new tunnel’), which is officially called ‘Kingsway’.
